France striker Karim Benzema will miss Qatar 2022 after suffering a hamstring injury in training.

Benzema won the 2022 Golden Ball award, given to the best soccer player in the world, after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League and La Liga.

A spokesman for the France national team said he had a hamstring problem and would not be able to take part in the tournament.

“The whole team shares Karim’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery,” he added.

The French Football Federation said an MRI had confirmed the thigh muscle injury “which requires a three-week recovery period”.

France are in Group D and will play Australia on November 22, Denmark on November 26 and Tunisia on November 30.

Manager Didier Deschamps has until Monday to name a replacement and the injury to 34-year-old Benzema, who has scored 37 goals in 97 games for France, is another blow for the holders.

The France national team are now without midfielders Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante through injuries, while Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is trying to stay fit after missing his last five games with his club.

Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku was ruled out of the tournament on Wednesday after training ended, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randall Kolo Mwani called up as a substitute.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is one of the possible options that could come in place of Benzema, who has been suffering from a hamstring problem since October.

The Real Madrid star has played under half an hour in his club’s last six games.

After leaving training with an injury on Saturday, he underwent a medical and took part in a full training session for the first time since the World Cup squad met last week.

“I’m very sad for Karim, who made the World Cup a big goal,” said Deschamps.

“Despite this renewed setback, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything we can to master the enormous challenge that lies ahead of us.”
