what is aging
US President Joe Biden turned 80 today, Sunday, making him the first president in US history to reach that age.
Biden is said to be celebrating his birthday during a luncheon hosted by his wife Jill, on an occasion that added to their joy at his granddaughter Naomi’s nuptials at a White House wedding yesterday Saturday.
Although Biden is already the oldest in office, the parameters of the 2024 White House race in the United States are still unclear.
Democracy, nearly 250 years old, celebrates youth, but millions of Americans, including Presidents, are now working past the traditional retirement age of 65.
Ronald Reagan was 77 when he left the White House, but Biden will be 86 when his second four-year term ends, if he wins it. His potential Republican opponent, Donald Trump, will be 82 at the end of his term if he wins the 2024 election.
The proportion of older people in American society is increasing and they continue to work until later in life. The population aged 65+ is expected to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million in 2060.
And by 2026, more than one in four men over the age of 65 will still be working, according to the Population Reference Bureau.
And some Americans have concerns about the advanced age of the most prominent potential candidate for the 2024 election.
And while 71 percent of Democrats believe Biden is “smart and able to handle challenges,” 46 percent of them say he may not be able to take on the challenge, according to a Reuters-Ipsos poll to run for the 2024 elections conducted on November 8th and 9th.
About a quarter of Republicans, or 26 percent, believe Trump may not be able to run in the 2024 election because of his age.
Political affiliation aside, 68 percent of respondents believe Biden may not be up to the challenge two years from now, and 49 percent say the same about Trump.
The poll found that about 86 percent of Americans believe anyone under the age of 75 should not be president.
When asked about concerns that Biden might be getting old before his 80th birthday, the White House said his recent record speaks for itself.
“As then-candidate Biden said in 2019, keep an eye on him,” said White House spokesman Andrew Bates.
The Reuters poll showed that two-thirds of respondents support the idea of an upper age limit for those who hold federal offices, including the president, members of Congress and Supreme Court justices.
However, Biden was not included in the list of the world’s ten oldest people who currently hold the leadership position, which is headed by Cameroonian President Paul Biya (aged 89).
