London (AFP) – Wales winger Gareth Bale announced his retirement from club and national team football, ending a successful football career.

“After careful and considered consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football,” Bale said on his social media account.

“I feel very fortunate to have fulfilled my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. Highest level over 17 seasons and will be impossible to repeat regardless what next season has in store for me.”

Bale led his country to the finals of the European Cup twice for the first time in its history, in 2016, reaching the semi-finals with them, then in 2021, and to the World Cup Qatar 2022 for the first time since 1958, and he also won in his nine years with him (2013 -2022) five times the European Champions League in the ranks of Real Madrid.

Bale holds the record for number of caps with Wales and is his top scorer.

The former Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and Los Angeles FC player played his last game for his country on 29 November against England in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar.
