Two Tik-Tok stars sentenced to flogging in Nigeria for mocking a government official

Two Nigerian TikTok stars have been sentenced to 20 lashes each, a 30-day court cleansing, a fine and a public apology after using social media to mock a government official.

Mubarak Issa Mohamed and Mohamed Bula were both convicted of defaming the Governor of northern Kano State, Abdullah Kandouji. The defendants’ lawyers expected that they would not appeal the verdict.

Nigeria has seen a growing number of social media stars providing comedy content to comment on social and political issues.

Mubarak Issa Mohamed and Mohamed Bula were arrested last week after they posted a video mocking the ruler for alleged land grabbing, corruption and sleeping at work.

The two young men’s lawyer, Bashir Yousef, told the BBC they would not appeal the verdict because it was a non-custodial sentence – meaning those convicted would not be jailed.
