Two people died in a second building collapse in Kenya this week
Kenyan authorities said a multi-storey building under construction atop a neighboring house on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital Nairobi collapsed today, killing two people.
Three other people were rescued alive from the family home, which was next to the collapsed building in the suburb of Rwaka.
The early morning collapse is the second of its kind this week as building authorities warn against unauthorized building in the city and its suburbs.
A multi-story building collapsed in the city on Tuesday, trapping construction workers.
It has been confirmed that three people were killed in the incident and the building’s owner fled before he could be arrested and charged.
Building collapses are common in Nairobi, where housing demand is high and unscrupulous developers often circumvent regulations.
After eight building collapses killed 15 people in Kenya in 2015, the presidency ordered all buildings in the country to be inspected to see if they met standard specifications.
The National Building Authority has determined that 58% of Nairobi’s buildings are uninhabitable.
