Turkey’s defense minister reveals the details of his talks with his Syrian counterpart
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar revealed the main points emphasized by the Turkish side at the recent meeting, which was held in Moscow for the first time in 11 years between the defense ministers of Syria and Turkey.
Turkish newspaper Sabah recently quoted Akar after the tripartite meeting with Syrian and Russian defense ministers: “We reiterated at the meeting that we support Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and our sole objective is to fight terrorism. And we found that a third of Syria is controlled by terrorist groups,” said a report by Russia’s Novosti agency (Saturday).
Akar continued: “We have made it clear that the Turkish army is in Syria to fight the PKK, the Kurdish People’s Defense Units (ISIS) and other terrorists and to prevent mass migration.” The Turkish minister stated: “It is normal that the negotiations come very late after eleven years. There are many factors and actors here. You cannot expect everything to be decided at once at this meeting. We said (to the Syrians) that we prevented the terror corridor and thereby contributed to your territorial integrity.” The Turkish minister pointed out that the importance of ensuring the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homes was stressed.
