The ‘Taliban’ movement unveiled in Afghanistan today (Sunday) the burial site of the militant Islamic movement’s founder, Mullah Omar, whose death and burial site have been kept secret for years.
Rumors about Mullah Omar’s health and whereabouts circulated after the Taliban were ousted from power following the US-led invasion in 2001, until April 2015 when officials for the movement admitted he had died two years earlier.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Agence France-Presse today (Sunday) that prominent leaders of the movement attended a ceremony around his grave near Omarzu in Zabul province earlier on Sunday. The Taliban regained power in August 2021, prompting the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces after 20 years of occupation.
Mujahid explained: “With so many enemies and because the country was occupied, the location of the tomb was kept secret to avoid damage. Only close family members know the place.” Images released by the authorities show Taliban leaders gathered around a plain white tomb protected by a green iron cage. The spokesman said, “Now the decision has been made…Therefore, there is no longer any problem for people to visit the tomb.”
Mullah Omar, who died at the age of 55, founded the Taliban movement in 1993, which took power in 1996 after years of civil war.
