The suspect in the shooting that killed six people Tuesday night at a Wal-Mart convenience store in Chesapeake, Virginia, was an employee and later committed suicide at the scene, police said Wednesday.
US President Joe Biden condemned the incident, which he described as “another insane act of violence”.
“More families are now experiencing the worst tragedy and pain imaginable,” he said in a White House statement as Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday.
“The suspect died from injuries we believe were self-inflicted,” Mark Suleski, the city’s police chief, said at a news conference.
The shots also resulted in injuries to four people who were taken to nearby hospitals. Her condition is unknown.
The community previously tweeted, “Chesapeake Police confirm that last night’s shooting at the Walmart at Sam’s Circle killed seven people, including the shooter.”

And the shooter is the only suspect in the new incident, which happened in the city of Chesapeake, 150 miles from Washington.
“We found several casualties and a number of wounded,” Leo Kosinski, the city’s police chief, told reporters, noting that intervention teams stormed the store “immediately” upon arriving at the site after receiving an emergency call.
“We believe we have a shooter and he is dead,” he added.
Images circulated by the news media showed a large number of police officers at the scene of the shooting.
Kosinski said investigators are conducting thorough searches of the store and securing its perimeter.
The Wal-Mart group said in a tweet it was “shocked by this tragic incident at our Chesapeake, Virginia store.”
