The Kremlin emphasizes that Kherson will remain Russian after Zelensky’s visit
The Kremlin stressed Monday that Kherson is still part of Russia after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the southern city from which Moscow’s troops withdrew last week.
“We leave it without comment,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of the visit, but added: “You know that this region is part of the Russian Federation.”
On Monday, the President of Ukraine visited Kherson, a Ukrainian Presidency source told AFP.
This visit comes after Russian forces withdrew from the city a few days ago after eight months of controlling the city and allowing Ukrainian soldiers the way into the city on Friday.
Zelenskyy announced on Sunday evening that Russian forces had committed “the same atrocities” in the part of Kherson they controlled that they had committed in other Ukrainian regions they controlled.
Ukrainians in the liberated city expressed relief that months of Russian control had ended.
Kherson was the first major city to fall to the Russians after the start of the war in Ukraine last February.
Its full restoration will open Ukraine’s gateway to the entire Kherson region, with access to both the Black Sea to the west and the Sea of Azov to the east.
