The Japanese celebrate an otter that predicted their national team’s World Cup victory over Germany
A river otter at a Tokyo aquarium has been met with fierce online acclaim from Japanese fans for predicting Japan’s victory over four-time world champions Germany in their opening World Cup match in Qatar yesterday, Japanese news agency Kyodo reported.
Taiyo, the otter at Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa in Tokyo, predicted Japan’s victory by placing a mini soccer ball in a blue bucket with the Japanese flag while ignoring the red bucket with the German flag and the yellow bucket with a word on it were on the eve of the game.
Overjoyed by Japan’s 2-1 win, Japanese soccer fans rushed to describe Taiyo, 8, as “amazing” and “extremely competent” online.
Others hoped he would predict the victory of the national samurai team in next Sunday’s group game against Costa Rica.
