Yesterday the young Iranian director Imad Ibrahim Dehkerdi won the “Golden Star”, the most important award of the International Film Festival in Marrakech, with his film “The Story of Shamron” and presented it to “Iranian Women”.

The film, Emad Ali Ibrahim Dehkerdi’s first feature film, explores the life of a young Iranian living in Chamron, north of Tehran, who turns to the dark side while trying to make easy money.

“I dedicate my award to all women in Iran and the young generation who are risking their lives for freedom,” said the 43-year-old director.

The jury, headed by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, which includes French actor Taher Rahim, Lebanese director Nadine Labaki and German-American actress Diane Kruger, awarded the best director prize to the dramatic film “Lightning” ( 2022) by the Swiss Carmen Jackie.

The Jury Prize went to two directors: Moroccan Maryam Al-Touzani for the film The Blue of the Caftan, representing Morocco at the Academy Awards, and Portuguese Christel Alves Mira for the film The Living Spirit. .

Korean actress Choi Sung-Yeon won the Best Actress award for her role in Canadian director Anthony Shim’s film ‘Raiseboy Sleeps’, while Indonesian director Arsundy Bening Swara won the Best Actress award for his role in the film ‘A Biography ‘ won his compatriot, director Maqbool Mubarak.

“During the selection process there were only dramatic works, perhaps because the new directors are interested in dramatic themes,” said Paolo Sorrentino.

On the other hand, courageous actress and producer Tilda Swinton was honored during the closing night of the Marrakech International Film Festival.

“I had the opportunity of a lifetime to find the secret door to a place where I could make films with some of the greatest filmmakers of our time,” Swinton said. And she added: “If you honor me, you honor my comrades,” citing Spanish directors Pedro Almodovar and American Wes Anderson, among others.

The International Film Festival took place in Marrakech from November 11th to 19th after a two-year absence due to the “Covid-19” pandemic.

Prominent names in cinema attended the festival, including French actress Isabelle Huppert, American director Jim Jarmusch and French director Leos Carax. 14 films applied for the “Golden Star”, six of them by female directors from 33 countries.
