NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday that it was up to Germany to decide whether to supply Ukraine with the Patriot missile interceptor system intended for Poland, after Warsaw had requested it in Berlin.

“I welcome the German offer to strengthen Poland’s air defenses by deploying Patriot missiles,” Stoltenberg said, noting that any plans to send specific weapons to Ukraine are “national decisions.”

“Sometimes there are agreements that need to be obtained for some users, so you have to consult with allies. But in the end, the decision will be made by national governments,” he said.

The German government on Monday offered Warsaw to equip it with an anti-aircraft system and a Patriot missile defense system after a missile slammed into Poland last week, killing two people.

However, Poland’s defense minister on Thursday urged Germany to hand over missile shipments to Ukraine to help it defend against the war in Ukraine that began in February.

Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said yesterday that this demand should be submitted to NATO.

Allies in the North Atlantic are already sending billions of dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine to help it wage war, including advanced air defense systems.

In this context, Stoltenberg confirmed that he would urge the NATO foreign ministers, who are meeting in Bucharest next week, to speed up deliveries to Ukraine.

Noting that “the best way to increase the chances of a peaceful solution is to support Ukraine,” he added, “that’s why NATO will continue to stand by Ukraine no matter how long it takes…we.” won’t give in. “
