Russia announces the killing of 120 Ukrainian soldiers in Donetsk
Yesterday, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that Russian forces had eliminated more than 120 Ukrainian soldiers heading towards the city of Donetsk, according to a statement, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany must be ready to escalate the situation in Ukraine.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian military units have foiled an attempted attack by Ukrainian forces towards the town of Krasny Lyman, which killed about 40 Ukrainian soldiers, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
The ministry added in its statement that Ukrainian forces fired eight large-caliber shells on the area surrounding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant on Monday.
The Russian Defense Ministry also said in its statement that Russian forces “defeated the enemy in the Vodianoye region of the Donetsk Republic and eliminated three Ukrainian sabotage groups near the village of Pavlovka.”
The statement notes that human losses of Ukrainian Armed Forces in this direction exceeded 50 people over the past day, including dead and wounded.
Russian forces managed to destroy two platoons of Ukrainian mortars in Luhansk, and the Ukrainian units lost more than 50 members and were deterred after attempting to launch an attack in Luhansk province.
In the Kharkiv region, Russian forces managed to eliminate a battery of US M777 artillery systems.
The Kremlin said no significant progress had been made in creating a security zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, and again accused Kyiv of bombing the plant and risking a nuclear accident.
Speaking at a conference in Berlin hosted by the Süddeutsche Zeitung yesterday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany must be ready to escalate the situation in Ukraine, but his recent trip to China draws its significance from the two countries’ joint statement against the use of nuclear weapons .
“As the war unfolds and Russia’s apparent and growing failures, we must be prepared for an escalation,” Schulz added, explaining that escalation could involve the destruction of infrastructure.
