A six-year-old boy was rescued from under the rubble, a rescue official said on Wednesday, two days after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck an area in Indonesia’s West Java province, killing at least 268 people.
And the German news agency quoted a firefighter named Aman Rianto, who was involved in the rescue operation of the child Azka, as saying that he was found alive under the rubble of a house in the village of Nagrek in Cianjur district on Wednesday morning, some 40 hours after Monday’s earthquake.
“He’s still breathing,” Rianto said. We thank God he was safe and treated promptly.”
Officials said many of the victims of Monday’s earthquake in Cianjur district were children attending after-school religious classes at mosques.
On the other hand, the National Disaster Management Agency said about 150 people are still missing in Cianjur after the quake.
“Our focus is to find those who are still missing within the next three days,” said Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, which like many Indonesians uses only one name.
According to the agency, more than 1,000 people were injured and 58,000 displaced. More than 2,300 buildings and homes were damaged, many of them reduced to rubble.
In a related development, the National Meteorological, Geophysical and Climatological Authority said the earthquake’s epicenter was ten kilometers southwest of Cianjur.
The earthquake shook high-rise buildings in Jakarta, causing residents and office workers to flee in panic.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
