Putin attends a “lonely” Christmas mass in the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Orthodox Church’s Christmas service at a Kremlin cathedral alone on Saturday rather than join other worshipers in a public ceremony.
RIA said it was the first time in years that Putin was celebrating Christmas in Moscow rather than in the capital’s area.
State television showed two live clips of Putin at the Annunciation Cathedral while Orthodox priests performed the midnight prayer known as the Divine Liturgy.
Putin was the only worshiper in the cathedral, and footage of him was shown on television before coverage shifted to a public mass at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
Putin celebrated Easter with thousands of others at the cathedral last year and attended Christmas last year alone at his official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow. Putin attended a public Divine Liturgy in Novgorod in 2021.
