Power cuts in large parts of Moldova after the Russian bombing of Ukraine

Moldova is experiencing “widespread power outages” on Wednesday after Russian strikes at Ukrainian power plants, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spino said.

“As a result of the Russian bombing of Ukraine’s energy system over the past hour, we are experiencing major power outages across the country,” Spino wrote on Facebook, while Moldova was already facing major energy problems due to the war in Ukraine.

He added that the country’s national energy company, MoldElectrica, is working to restore power.

Foreign Minister Nico Popescu said power outages had hit the capital and even the Foreign Ministry building.

“I have ordered the Russian ambassador to be summoned for an explanation,” he added in a tweet.

For her part, Maia Sandu, President of the EU-affiliated Republic of Moldova, wrote on Facebook Wednesday after the latest round of Russian attacks: “Russia has kept Moldova in the dark.”
