The head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, confirmed today that talks on a new political framework for the country were underway, but he strongly warned the former ruling party not to even interfere with the army in politics.
Reuters reported on Friday that the army had submitted comments on the draft constitution, paving the way for steps towards a formal new agreement with the country’s political parties.
Speaking to soldiers at a military base north of Khartoum, Al-Burhan confirmed talks were ongoing.
“Any sinking will save Sudan, we will join hands,” he said, adding that he would not agree to anything that would lead to the disintegration of the army.
He said: “We warn the people who are running after the army and special words for the national conference and the Islamic movement.”
He continued, “If you run 30 years, it’s enough for you to give people a chance… You don’t want that, the army will bring you back again.”
Al-Burhan said: “All persons who signed or belong to the organization that dissolved the previous organization in 2019 have a legitimate right to our standing by them to complete the transition period so that we can have elections,” he added that other political groups are also included to increase consensus.
