Brazilian soccer legend Pele, who has been hospitalized in Sao Paulo since last Tuesday, said he feels “strong and full of hope” as he continues treatment for colon cancer.

The 82-year-old legend announced this in a statement Instagram โ€œMy friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive. I am strong, I have a lot of hope and I am continuing my treatment as usual.โ€

“I want to thank the entire medical and nursing team for the care I have received. I have so much faith in God and every message of love I receive from you around the world makes me so full of energy. Seeing Brazil too the World Cup! Thank you for everything,” he added.

Pele was rushed to a Sao Paulo hospital earlier this week to give doctors a “reevaluation” of the chemotherapy he had received since surgery to remove a colon polyp last September.

The Lusail Stadium in Doha, where the World Cup final will be held, and the Aspire Tower next to the Khalifa Stadium were illuminated with images of Pele wearing his famous number 10 shirt.

And on the corniche of the Qatari capital, dozens of “Drone” drones that light up the sky every night drew a Brazil jersey with the name Pele and the No. 10 on the back.

And Brazilian reports on Saturday suggested Pele’s condition had deteriorated in recent hours and was in serious danger of death.

Many players in Qatar have expressed concern over the health of the only three-time world champion.

France striker Kylian Mbappe continued to write Twitter “Pray to the king.”

England captain Harry Kane said during a press conference: “We also send our best wishes to him and his family. He’s an inspiration in our sport and he’s a wonderful player and an amazing person. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

A hospital statement on Friday said Pele had a “respiratory infection and was being treated with antibiotics.”

On Friday, Pele thanked supporters in a message on Instagram: “Friends I’m in hospital doing my monthly visit. It’s always great to receive positive news. Thanks to Qatar for this gesture and to everyone who sends positive feelings.”
