North Korea warns of “strongest countermeasures” against any attempt to violate its sovereignty

North Korea has warned of the “strongest countermeasure” against any attempt to violate its sovereignty and has criticized South Korea and the United States for their joint aerial exercises.

The North’s foreign ministry said Pyongyang had issued a clear warning that the United States should immediately halt the provocative joint Vigilant Storm aerial exercise if it did not want to see a dangerous situation harming its national interests.

The ministry described the US actions as “irresponsible and reckless” and condemned the air operation as a serious violation of the security of a sovereign state and a flagrant challenge to the international community’s desire to achieve peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang said it will not tolerate any attempt by hostile forces to violate its sovereignty and security interests and will respond with the strongest countermeasures. A South Korean naval vessel is scheduled to take part in an international review of Japan’s fleet for the first time in seven years amid mounting nuclear and missile threats from North Korea. South Korea is one of 14 countries, including hosts Japan, the United States, Canada and Australia, scheduled to take part in the parade, which will be held at Sagami Bay off Kanagawa Prefecture, about 40 kilometers southeast of Tokyo, Yonhap news agency reported . The 10,000-ton South Korean logistics support ship “Soyang” arrived at the port of Yokosuka last Tuesday. This is the first time the South Korean Navy has participated in the Naval Parade in Japan since 2015.

The South Korean Navy participated in the Japan Naval Parade in 2002 and 2015, while the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force joined the South Korean Naval Parade in 1998 and 2008.
