Look… A passenger plane collides with a truck on takeoff and catches fire in Peru
On takeoff on Friday, a passenger plane collided with a fire truck at Lima International Airport, setting the plane on fire, evacuating passengers and killing two firefighters, official sources said.
Lima Airport Partners, operator of Jorge Chavez Airport, said it “deeply regrets the death of two members of its air fire department in the accident between a fire truck and an airplane on flight LA 2213 from Lima to Juliaca” near the border with Bolivia.
A paramedic who was in the fire department vehicle was also injured in the crash, security officer Aurelio Aureliana said, stating he was “in critical condition with a head injury.”
For its part, Latam airline, which operates this domestic flight, confirmed that “none of the passengers or crew died.”
The aircraft carried 100 passengers, two passengers and a crew of six.

LATAM Peru Managing Director Manuel Van Ord expressed surprise at the presence of firefighters on the runway at a press conference at the airport and said the plane’s pilot had not been informed of anything unusual.
“No emergency was reported on the flight, which was in the best take-off conditions. He was cleared to take off and found a truck on the runway that we don’t know what he was doing there,” he said.
The Ministry of Transport also confirmed that “an accident occurred on the runway at Jorge Chavez Airport”. “Following the death of two air firefighters and the wounding of a paramedic, prosecutors are seeking clarification of the facts before a possible charge of murder and assault is filed,” she said.
Footage filmed by witnesses to the crash and broadcast by TV stations showed the aircraft, which flight-tracking websites said was an Airbus A320, proceeding at full speed for takeoff, then collided with a speeding truck and blocked the road in front .
With the landing gear damaged, the aircraft continued on its course and hit the runway with its right wing, emitting sparks. When it stopped, thick smoke came out and a fire broke out.
A number of flights have been canceled while others have been diverted to Pisco Airport, 250km south of Lima. It also saw disruption to international flights, particularly with North America, as Lima is a major hub for transport traffic in the region.
