London denies seeking a Swiss-style relationship with the European Union

The UK government on Sunday denied a report it was seeking a “Swiss-style” relationship with the European Union that would remove many of the economic obstacles stemming from Brexit as it seeks to sharpen ties with the bloc after years improve relationships disagreement.

“I do not support the Sunday Times report,” Health Secretary Steve Barclay told Sky News, stressing that the UK remains committed “to using the freedoms we have gained through Brexit” by making changes in key areas removed from EU rules.

Switzerland maintains close economic ties with the European Union of 27 in exchange for accepting the bloc’s rules and pumping money into its coffers.

“Brexit means we will never again have to settle for a relationship with Europe that would mean a return to free movement, unnecessary payments to the EU, or jeopardizing the full benefits of the trade deals we can now strike around the world.” so the UK government said.

But despite the denials, the new Conservative government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to restore ties with the European Union, acknowledging that Brexit has come at an economic cost to Britain.

For his part, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt expressed optimism last week that trade barriers between the UK and the EU will be removed in the coming years.
