Life sentences in absentia for 3 convicts in Malaysian plane crash case in Ukraine

A Dutch court on Thursday sentenced three men in absentia to life in prison for shooting down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, amid heightened tensions over the Russian invasion.

“The court imposes life imprisonment” on Russians Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinsky and Ukrainian Leonid Charchenko, who were convicted of murder and involvement in the destruction of the plane, said presiding judge Hendrik Stenhaus.

The four defendants remained at large and refused to attend the trial, which lasted two and a half years in the Netherlands and took place after an international investigation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed this “important decision”. He said that “punishment for all Russian atrocities – yesterday and today – will be inevitable”.

On the other hand, Russia denounced a “political” verdict, calling the trial “almost one of the most scandalous (trials) in the history of judicial proceedings,” adding: “We deeply regret that the court neglected the principles of judicial impartiality in the service of the current political situation, which is a serious blow to the reputation of the whole system.” Justice in the Netherlands.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg considered the verdict “an important day for the judiciary” and added on Twitter: “There is no way to avoid punishment for similar crimes.”
Washington, in turn, welcomed the verdict, seeing it as an “important step” on the road to justice.

All 298 passengers and crew aboard the Boeing 777 were killed when it was hit over eastern Ukraine by pro-Moscow separatists with a Russian-provided missile, prosecutors say.
