Heavy rains in Jeddah .. and the death of two people and the interruption of studies

Heavy rains fell in the Saudi city of Jeddah yesterday, resulting in the deaths of two people, the suspension of studies, flight delays and the closure of the road to Mecca Al-Mukarramah for hours, according to Saudi media.

And the region of the Emirate of Mecca Al-Mukarramah announced the “precautionary closure of the Mecca-Jeddah highway due to the rain,” before announcing its reopening hours later. Heavy rains in Jeddah flooded a number of main streets and roads in the governorate, leaving a large number of vehicles damaged.

A spokesman for civil defense in the Makkah Al-Mukarramah region said: “Two deaths have been recorded so far and we urge everyone not to go out unless it is necessary.”

And Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport announced on its Twitter account, “Due to weather conditions, the start of some flights has been delayed,” urging travelers to contact airlines to confirm the new schedules.

And the Saudi press agency said at dawn yesterday: “In order to ensure the safety of male and female students, it was decided to suspend classes in all schools in Jeddah, Rabigh and Khulais.”

Major flooding killed 123 people in Jeddah in 2009 and about 10 two years later.
