The survivor wrote the word HELP on his sailboat, which helped locate it 120 nautical miles northwest of Puerto Bolivar in northern La Guajira province.

Francois said: “I spotted an airplane in the sky on January 15th and started sending signals to it by the reflection of the sun’s rays on a mirror I had and when I saw it fly by twice I realized that the saw me inside.” He added that the Colombian Navy came immediately to rescue him with the help of a merchant ship.

A statement from the Colombian Navy says the man, who is stationed in the Dominican Republic, was lost at sea due to bad weather that day while sailing a boat off a port on the island of Saint-Martin in the northeastern Antilles repaired .

He added: “The man, knowing nothing of seafaring, was lost and lost at sea, and his efforts to deal with the craft and her equipment were in vain.”

François tried several times to contact the emergency room, but was unsuccessful due to the weakness of the communications network.

“The only thing I could do was sit and wait … 24 days alone on land, I didn’t even know what to do or where I was. It was tough and I lost hope and I always thought about my family,” the man said. Procedures have been started for his return to the Dominican Republic.
