Gunmen released a group of 21 children they kidnapped last week from a farm in northwestern Nigeria’s Katsina state, police said, and they were returned to their families yesterday.
Kidnappings have been rampant in recent years in Katsina, the birthplace of President Muhammadu Buhari, where armed gangs are kidnapping people from schools, hospitals, farms and the streets for ransom from their loved ones.
Parents of three of those kidnapped told Reuters that the gunmen released the children, aged between 8 and 14, after the parents paid a ransom of 1.5 million naira (US$3,400), but police spokesman Jambo Issa denied payment of the ransom. “They have been reunited with their families,” Issa said in a WhatsApp message yesterday.
The three parents, who spoke to Reuters, asked that their names not be released for fear of retaliation from authorities unwilling to pay the ransom, or even from the kidnappers themselves.
“They threatened us that if we didn’t pay the ransom between 4 and 5 p.m. last night, they would take them deeper into the forest and we would never see them again,” explained one of the fathers, adding that some of the parents took issue relatives would have to help collect their share of the money.
Parents reported that more than 30 children were kidnapped on October 30 while harvesting at a farm between the villages of Kamvanin Milavia and Kormen Duka in Katsina, but some of them managed to escape. Police and parents assured that all children are now free.
