External energy recovery at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency has announced that external power has been restored at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi said two lines were damaged after the area was bombed, forcing the site to use emergency diesel generators for two days.

The plant has lost external power several times during the current conflict in Ukraine. Although not currently operational, the facility still requires electricity to cool vital materials and prevent a nuclear accident.

“The frequent power outages clearly show how serious the nuclear safety situation of a large nuclear power plant is,” said Grossi. The International Atomic Energy Agency is attempting to establish a safe zone around the facility to reduce the risk of a nuclear accident. “We can’t afford to lose any more time,” added Grossi. We must act before it is too late.”
