DOHA, Nov 23, WAM/ The Spain national team secured a magnificent victory over their Costa Rican counterparts, who defeated them at Al Thumama Stadium, in their opening match in Group E of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with seven unanswered goals.
The match was arbitrated by an Emirati referee team led by Muhammad Abdullah Hassan, the court referee, and each of the two assistant referees, Muhammad Ahmed Al Hammadi and Hassan Al Mahri, and managed to referee the match efficiently and easily the game events, the decisions of the referee staff were not affected by the video referee technology (the mouse).
The Spanish national team ended the first half with a 3-0 lead through Dani Olmo (11′), Marco Asensio (21′) and Ferran Torres (31′) from penalties.
In the second half, the Spanish national team added four new goals (90+2) through Torres (54′), Jaffe (75′), Carlos Soler (90′) and Alvaro Morata.
With this result, the Spanish team topped the Group E table with three points, with a goal difference to the Japanese team, who got the same number of points, and the German and Costa Rican teams finished third and fourth without points.
This game is the highest winning record at the World Cup to date and the second-highest goal tally in a game after England v Iran, in which 8 goals were scored in England’s 6-2 win.
