The Egyptian Ministry of Health said a bus fell into a water canal in the Nile Delta yesterday, killing at least 21 people.

dr Sherif Makin, a Health Department official, said three children were among the dead.

The ministry said in its statement that the accident happened in Dakahlia governorate, which is about 100 km northeast of the capital Cairo.

The other injured passengers were taken to a local hospital.

A senior provincial police officer said the driver may have lost control of the bus.

The Dakahlia Safety Directorate received a report that a minibus (bus) had fallen into the water of a canal on the Mansoura-Aga road in Dakahlia governorate while traveling from Mit Ghamr to Mansoura with passengers.

According to the directorate, ambulances and river rescue vehicles rushed to the scene and it was determined that 21 people died and 17 others were rescued.

Safety sources said there were about 38 people on the bus and that the accident “happened due to speeding and while the driver was trying to overtake a car in front of him, the steering wheel broke and the bus crashed into the canal.”
