Dutch world champion Max Verstappen ended the 2022 season of the Formula One World Championship with victory at Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 22nd and final round at the Yas Marina Circuit, earning his fifteenth win of the year.

Monaco’s Charles Leclerc, a Ferrari driver, snatched the championship runner-up after finishing second in the UAE capital, ahead of Mexico’s Sergio Pires, the third Red Bull driver after they tied on points in the final race had.

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel, the four-time world champion, rode the final race of his career, 299th, and finished tenth, snatching an orphan point.
“I was hoping to get more points… It’s a great day, thanks for all the support, I’m sure I’ll miss it more than I can imagine,” he said after the race.

Ferrari won the constructors’ championship at the expense of Mercedes (554 points vs. 515) after the conflict between the two hangars was open until the last race after the other Ferrari driver, Spaniard Carlos Science, finished fourth while Brit George Russell, Ferrari driver, finished fifth, and his compatriot and colleague Lewis Hamilton retired from the race with two laps to go due to a mechanical failure.

This season, Red Bull ended Mercedes’ eight-year dominance of the title.

Verstappen, who clinched his 35th career win in the first category, returned to the track that had his crowning glory ahead of him last season with his first titles in the last race of the year and last lap in dramatic and controversial fashion had Hamilton, who deprived the latter of a record eighth title and dissolved the partnership with German Michael Schumacher (7th for both).

Hamilton struggled again on track after being forced to retire with two laps to go due to a mechanical failure and ended the season sixth in the Drivers’ Championship.

And Al-Sir finished the season without a win, failing to break the record for winning at least one race for the sixteenth straight year that he shares with Schumacher (15 straight each).
