Difficult issues… An American-Russian meeting in Istanbul
The Russian news agency TASS reported that representatives from Russia and the United States will meet in Istanbul on Friday.
She added that both sides will discuss a number of “difficult issues” including visas, the number of staff in their embassies and the work of each side’s institutions and agencies abroad, among a range of other issues.
The Russian embassy in Washington and the US embassy in Moscow have both slashed staff significantly in recent years as part of a series of mutual operations that have seen dozens of American and Russian diplomats return to their countries.
Face-to-face intelligence meetings
Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s foreign intelligence agency, met with CIA Director William Burns in the Turkish capital of Ankara on November 14, the highest face-to-face meeting between the two sides since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

The upcoming meeting comes a day after the success of a prisoner swap between Washington and Moscow, with the release of American basketball player Brittney Greiner in exchange for Russian Victor Bout.
However, the Kremlin announced that the prisoner swap involving the Russian arms dealer and the American basketball star should not be seen as a move to improve bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.
The TASS news agency quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that relations between the two countries are still “in an unfortunate state”.
