Doha (AFP) – Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo made history after becoming the first player to score in five World Cup finals by opening the scoring for his country against fellow Ghanaian at Qatar 2022 on Thursday.

Ronaldo’s eighth World Cup goal came from a penalty he grabbed himself and successfully put into the Ghana net, which will take some of the pressure off the 37-year-old, who has been under criticism for his attack on his English side Manchester United and his Netherlands coach Eric ten Hag , which led to the termination of his contract with the club, by mutual consent.

Ronaldo opened his World Cup record with a goal in 2006, then represented them in 2010 and 2014 before scoring four goals in 2018, including a hat-trick against Spain (3-3).

The 37-year-old outstripped Brazilian legend Pele, who scored in four versions (1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970), and Germany’s Uwe Zeller, who scored in the same versions Pele scored in, and Miroslav Klose (2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014).

Ronaldo cemented his record as top international goalscorer with 118 goals in 192 games and was one goal removed from legend Eusebio’s equation as Portugal’s top scorer at the finals of the World Cup, but the latter scored all of his nine goals in one edition in 1966.
