Creation of a team to decide on requests to raise raw material prices
The Supreme Consumer Protection Committee discussed its comprehensive strategy for the next stage of strengthening the consumer protection regime and increasing the efficiency of control mechanisms in the markets during its meeting chaired by Economy Minister Abdullah bin Touq Al-Marri.
The committee announced the issuance of a ministerial decision on the formation of a team of experts and specialists to examine requests for price increases for consumer goods, and another decision was issued to authorize the formation of the Automobile Committee to improve its oversight and ensure that in cars imported into the country meet the highest quality and safety standards. It recommended the development of an integrated plan to combat nuisance calls and the organization of mechanisms to deal with them.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the committee reviewed the pricing policy for basic consumer goods in the country, which is based on the approval of price freedom according to the principles of supply and demand and in a way that ensures balance and stability of prices through the principle of competition and market mechanisms, with the exception of one Group of consumer goods related to the basic needs of citizens and residents, which is required for traders to obtain prior approval from the Ministry of Economy before applying a price increases, and the main of these goods are: (edible oils, eggs, fresh milk, rice, sugar , fresh chicken, legumes, bread, flour, cleaning supplies) with a fixed profit margin. The maximum limit for each commodity for suppliers or points of sale. During its last related meeting, the Committee recommended the formation of a permanent technical team of Committee members to consider and decide on repeated requests for increases in commodity prices, according to the mechanisms and controls previously established.
She announced during the meeting that a ministerial decision was issued on the formation of the team, consisting of a group of experts and specialists, to consider requests for price increases for consumer goods.
The committee also discussed ways of cooperation between the Economy Ministry and the country’s relevant authorities to develop and update procedures for the recall of goods, especially defective vehicles. In this regard, she announced the issuance of a ministerial decision authorizing the formation of the Automobile Committee, which will strengthen its oversight to ensure that cars imported into the country meet the highest quality standards and safety requirements.
The committee also looked at its plan to reduce intrusive marketing communications and their negative impact on economic activities in the country, in addition to the resort of some parties to harm consumers through some fraudulent practices.
The committee recommended creating an integrated plan to counter nuisance calls, organize mechanisms to counter them, and solve the problem of unwanted calls through coordination between state actors, telecom companies and consumers.
