The ship carries approximately 4,600 passengers and crew

A cruise ship with about 800 coronavirus cases among its passengers docked at Sydney Harbour, Australia.

The ship, the Majestic Princess, was launched from New Zealand and was carrying 4,600 passengers in addition to crew members, meaning the infection rate with the virus among those on board has reached 20 percent.

This commemorates the outbreak of HIV infection aboard the Ruby Princess in 2020, when at least 900 passengers became infected, 28 of whom died.

Most of the infected cases were detected in the second half of the ship’s 12-day tour, said Margaret Fitzgerald, president of the ship’s cruise line.

She explained that most cases had either no symptoms at all or only moderate symptoms.

And she added: “Crew members will assist any injured by providing specific transport or accommodation for each of them until the end of the isolation period,” noting that the ship will continue its voyage to Melbourne, Australia.

Asked about the comparison between this ship and its predecessor two years ago, the Ruby Princess, operated by the same company, Margaret said: “We have learned a lot about the corona virus as a team since then.”

This comes at a time when cases of the virus are rising in Australia.

And in the province of New South Wales, 19,800 new infections occurred in the past week alone.
