China announces further deaths from Corona in view of rising infections
China announced the deaths of two elderly people from the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19) in Beijing today, Monday, while many major cities continue to impose strict restrictions to contain the virus despite the recent easing of measures.
China is the only major economic power still taking strict measures to contain the spread of Covid, having imposed lockdowns and a large-scale testing campaign.
Although the central government this month announced the biggest move yet to ease restrictions aimed at containing the virus, authorities in many regions continued to implement strict restrictions despite the high number of infections.
On Monday, local authorities announced the death of a 91-year-old woman who had previously suffered a stroke and was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and an 88-year-old man who was suffering from cancer, pneumonia and a stroke.
And on Sunday officials announced the death of an 87-year-old man in Beijing whose condition worsened from a bacterial infection.
The number of new infections in the capital rose to 962 today, Monday, from 621 a day earlier, as authorities continue to impose various restrictions to contain the disease.
Schools in some neighborhoods have been asked to switch to distance learning and office workers have been asked to work from home.
