Biden meets with Chinese leader: We hope to avoid clash between Washington and Beijing

U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping shook hands Monday on the sidelines of the G20 Bali Summit to kick off their summit meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

As the Chinese president greeted his American counterpart, Biden smiled and said, “Nice to see you,” prompting intense talks expected to last two hours.

Biden assured Xi that there was “no alternative” to direct talks and expressed his hope of avoiding a “conflict” between Washington and Beijing.

For his part, Xi told the US President, “We all care very much” about US-China relations.

He added he was ready for “open” talks on strategic issues.

Biden said before the conference began that “the world expects China and the United States to play an important role in addressing the issues of climate change and food security,” noting that “the two countries are managing their differences and competition.” between them to keep them from getting into conflict.”

The Chinese leader said, “Beijing-Washington relations are important to us and we must set the right course for them.”

“I look forward to working with the American President to restore ties and serve both countries and the world,” he added.

Ahead of the meeting, the White House announced that President Biden intended to resume dialogue with his Chinese counterpart during his meeting Monday, but would also try to identify “guarantees” in the context of rising tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Heading to the upcoming meeting in Bali, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters Sunday that President Biden has an opportunity to host a trilateral meeting with the Japanese prime minister and the president of Korea. They discussed “cross-strait peace and stability,” among other things, and he said Biden consulted with the two leaders when he met President Xi and explained what he intended to do in Bali.
