Iraqi police sources said an American national was killed in the capital Baghdad on Monday after a failed attempt to kidnap him.
The sources added that the body was taken to a hospital in the Karrada district of the Iraqi capital and that a preliminary report from the hospital indicated he died from a bullet.
A police source said the victim was carrying an ID showing he was working as an English teacher.
Another police source added that gunmen opened fire from a vehicle on a sports car the victim was traveling in, killing him.
An Iraqi police major said, “According to our initial investigation and eyewitnesses, gunmen tried to kidnap the American citizen.”
The official Iraqi news agency said that the commander-in-chief of the armed forces issued an order to form a committee of inquiry into the assassination of the American citizen.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the Department is aware of reports of the killing of an American citizen in Iraq and is reviewing those reports.
“We will of course inform the next of kin before making any public statements,” he added in a regular news conference.
