America.. Clerk kills 6 at Wal-Mart store in Virginia then commits suicide
Virginia police said yesterday the suspect in the shooting that killed six people at a Walmart convenience store in Chesapeake the night before last was an employee and committed suicide at the scene.
US President Joe Biden condemned the incident, which he described as “another insane act of violence”.
“More families are now experiencing the worst tragedy and pain imaginable,” he said in a White House statement as Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving today.
“The suspect died from injuries we believe resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” City Police Chief Mark Suleski said at a news conference.
The shots also resulted in injuries to four people who were taken to nearby hospitals. Her condition is unknown.
Earlier, the community tweeted, “The Chesapeake Police Department confirms that seven people were killed, including the shooter, as a result of last night’s shooting at Walmart at Sam’s Circle.”
And the shooter is the only suspect in the new incident, which happened in the city of Chesapeake, 150 miles from Washington.
“We found several casualties and a number of wounded,” Metropolitan Police Officer Leo Kozinski told reporters, noting that intervention teams stormed the store “immediately” upon arriving at the site after receiving an emergency call.
“We believe we have a shooter and he is dead,” he added.
Images circulated by the news media showed a large number of police officers at the scene of the shooting. Kosinski said investigators are conducting thorough searches of the store and securing its perimeter. The Walmart Group tweeted that it was “shocked by this tragic incident at our Chesapeake, Virginia store.”
“We are working closely with law enforcement,” the retail giant added.
