A UN spokesman calls for an investigation into the shooting of Russian soldiers in Ukraine

The emergence of videos that appear to show the shooting of surrendering Russian soldiers has sparked international investigations, and a spokesman for the United Nations Human Rights Office in Geneva told dpa on Monday he was aware of the reports.

He added: “Allegations of summary executions of incapacitated persons must be promptly, fully and effectively investigated, a French term used in international law to mean not being involved in an active struggle or unable to to carry out combat missions in war.”

Videos posted on social media last week showed several Russian soldiers – under Ukrainian escorts – lying on the ground while gunshots were heard. Another recording showed about 12 bodies.

Media reported that the pictures were taken in mid-November when the Ukrainian army recaptured the village of Makevka in the Luhansk region in the east of the country.

According to experts consulted by the New York Times, the videos are authentic, although much remains unclear about the images’ background.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow would look for the perpetrators itself.

Kyiv says the Russians were killed in self-defense when one of the soldiers suddenly opened fire. The Ukrainians returned fire and acted correctly, according to the Ukrainian Commissioner for Human Rights.
