European Union interior ministers held an emergency meeting on Friday to try to ease escalating tensions over irregular migration and to discuss concerns about a rising number of asylum-seekers arriving via the western Balkans after the fate of migrants rescued in the Mediterranean died out had led to a harsh exchange of words between the two countries of Paris and Rome. Meanwhile, a shooting in a town in northern Serbia led to the detection of 600 irregular migrants near the border with Hungary.

The meeting, held in Brussels at the request of Paris, comes amid the recent crisis with Rome over the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking, which had 234 migrants on board.

The ship finally docked in France “on an exceptional basis” on November 11 after the “far right” Italian government led by Georgia Meloni refused to accept it.

Relations in the bloc have long been plagued by disputes over who should be responsible for those who come to the EU on rickety boats to escape poverty or war.

“We cannot and should not work on the basis of crisis-by-crisis, ship-by-ship, incident-by-incident solution, we need a single framework based on EU law,” said EU Commissioner Margaritis Schinas upon her arrival the meeting.

Schinas called on member states to approve new EU-wide legislation on migration.

More than 90,000 migrants and refugees entered the 27-nation European Union via the Mediterranean from North Africa to Italy or Malta this year, 50 percent more than in 2021.

Southern EU countries like Italy, Spain and Greece, where most migrants arrive, say they are under a lot of pressure and that northern EU countries are not helping them enough.

Much of the focus is on migrant arrivals via the Mediterranean, but illegal entry into the EU via the Western Balkans has also increased.

Schinas said that the commission will also prepare proposals in this regard.

law of the sea

On the sidelines of the meeting of European Union interior ministers, tensions between France and Italy were highlighted when French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanan, upon arriving in Brussels to attend the meeting, said that there was no reason for France to take in immigrants redistributed from Italy, when Rome “receives no boats and does not recognize the law of the sea”.

Darmanin had announced the suspension of Italy’s reception of 3,500 asylum seekers in response to its “unacceptable” stance on receiving migrants stranded at sea. Some 12 European countries pledged to take in and care for 8,000 people, but ended up taking in 117 people.

Last Monday, the European Commission presented an action plan to speed up the refugee transfer mechanism, which also aims to enhance and improve cooperation on sea rescue between Member States and with non-governmental organizations operating humanitarian vessels ‘ on ‘Guiding principles for those ships conducting rescue operations at sea.

Darmanan said: “Our desire is to resume this mechanism because it is the only mechanism that allows for burden sharing across Europe and to force countries of entry – like Italy – to set the borders we need and all foreigners to.” register who come to the US region Europe, the situation is not like that now.”

The plan also aims to strengthen cooperation with countries of origin and transit – notably Tunisia, Libya and Egypt – to curb migration and increase irregular deportations of migrants.

Paris also sees the goal as “making the work of non-governmental organizations better.” Italy – along with Greece, Malta and Cyprus – has criticized humanitarian organizations that “operate their own ships in complete independence from the authorities concerned,” while Germany refuses to restrict the work of these ships, that rescue operations take place at sea.

On the other hand, Serbia’s Interior Ministry said that police today spotted 600 irregular migrants near the border with Hungary after a person was shot in a town.

Police said the incident happened in the early hours of the morning in the town of Horgos in northern Serbia, after reports came in of immigrants on the street exchanging fire.

She added that they found “6 immigrants, one of whom is around 20 years old, with two gunshot wounds to the chest.”

The ministry said in a separate statement, citing Interior Minister Bratislav Jasic, that police conducted an operation that eventually led to the discovery of 600 migrants in the area, weapons and some of those involved in the shooting.

The Western Balkans route through Turkey, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Serbia remains the main route for migrants into the European Union, Frontex, the European border agency, said last September.
