5 dead in gunfire at protesters in western Iran
Iranian security forces opened fire on protesters in a western Kurdish town on Monday, killing at least five, activists said, during an anti-government protest that broke out during the funeral of two people killed the previous day.
Video clips circulating on the internet showed dozens of protesters hiding in alleys while heavy gunfire rang through the streets, as well as individuals lying motionless and bloodstained in the streets while other residents gathered at a local hospital to ask for blood to donate.
Protests in Iran have widened since the September 16 killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a Kurd who died after being held in police custody in the capital Tehran.
Kurdish human rights organization Hengaw said Iranian security forces fired heavy shots at protesters in the town of Javanrud, where funerals were being held for two protesters killed the previous day. It cited witnesses who said Iranian forces used heavy machine guns.
