The defendants have insisted on denying the facts and allegations attributed to them, and some have indicated that their presence at the scene was out of curiosity and not to participate in the commission of the crime.

According to Sky News Arabia, the prosecutor’s brief had called for the death penalty to be imposed on 74 of the 102 people arrested in the case of the killing and burning of the body of young Jamal bin Ismail.

Details of the case date back to August 2021, when videos of the killing of young man Jamal Ben Ismail, 37, in Tizi Ouzou governorate (150 km east of the capital Algiers) circulated on social media.

Ben Ismail had traveled to the Kabylia region from Miliana governorate on his own initiative to help fight the fire. The perpetrators of the crime arrested him and handed him over to the police, suspecting he was behind the arson.

But they were not satisfied with that, because they stormed the police station, took him out by force, killed him, dragged his body and burned him publicly.

The accident nearly led to a major crisis in Algeria, but the wisdom of the murdered young man’s father ended a major dispute that nearly broke out between residents of the two provinces.

The handing down of these sentences comes at a time when Algerian law has frozen the use of the death penalty for more than 40 years.
