The first Chinese spy extradited to the United States has been jailed for trying to steal trade secrets from Western aerospace companies in a landmark case related to American efforts to thwart Chinese industrial espionage, according to Bloomberg News.

The US Department of Justice said in a statement released Wednesday that a federal court in Cincinnati had sentenced Yangon Xu, a deputy director of one of the branches of China’s Ministry of State Security, to a 20-year prison term.

Court documents showed that Xu, 42, had targeted US airline employees, including GA Aviation, and searched for proprietary information at the behest of the Chinese government.

“This case is the latest example of the Chinese government’s continued attacks on American economic security and, by extension, our national security,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.
