At least 19 people died after a Precision Air plane crashed into Lake Victoria while attempting to land at an airport in the lakeside town of Bukoba, the prime minister said.

“All Tanzanians share your sorrow at the death of these people,” Kasim Majaliwa told reporters in Bukoba. The President of Tanzania Samia Solho Hassan offered her condolences to those who lost loved ones.

The Rescue and Fire Department said rescuers got 26 survivors to safety after the plane crashed due to bad weather and it contained 43 passengers, including 39 passengers, two pilots and two crew members who were on flight BW 494, the took off from the economic capital of Dar Peace to the city on the lake in the district of Kagera.

Video footage released to local media showed the plane much of it submerged in water as rescuers and fishermen tried to get people to safety.

Aid workers, with the help of local residents, tried to lift the plane out of the water using ropes and cranes.
